Turning 65 - What You Need to Know!

Turning 65 - What You Need to Know!

Congratulations on approaching a new chapter—turning 65! This is a key time to start thinking about your health coverage, specifically Medicare. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what you need to do to enroll in Medicare and make the best choice for your healthcare needs.

1. Enrolling in Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B covers medical services like doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services. If you're already receiving Social Security benefits, you'll be automatically enrolled in both Medicare Parts A and B. However, if you're not automatically enrolled, here's how to sign up:
  • Online: You can enroll in Medicare Part B through the Social Security website. www.ssa.gov/medicare
  • Phone: Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance with your enrollment.

2. Important Enrollment Timelines

Timing is key when it comes to Medicare. Here are the timelines you need to know:
  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is a 7-month window that starts 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and extends 3 months after. It’s the best time to sign up for Medicare without penalties. I recommend applying as soon as you can.  For example, if you turn 65 in August, then apply for part B in May.
  • General Enrollment Period (GEP): If you miss your IEP, you can still enroll in Medicare during the GEP, which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year, but there may be a late enrollment penalty.

If you have questions about your enrollment window or need help deciding when to sign up, feel free to contact me directly.  https://www.piersoninsurance.com/schedule-an-appointment.html

3. Your Medicare Options: Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage

Once you've enrolled in Medicare, the next step is choosing the right coverage. You have two primary options:
  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap) with a Prescription Drug Plan (Part D): This option allows you to keep Original Medicare (Parts A & B) and add supplemental coverage to help cover costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. You’ll also need to enroll in a separate Prescription Drug Plan (Part D).
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C): This is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. It includes your Part A and B benefits, often with additional services like dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.

It’s important to choose the option that fits your health needs and budget. Let’s discuss which plan is best for you. I’m here to walk you through it!
